Structural Heart disease intervention is a relatively new term that has emerged as a consequence of new technology being more available to heart patients.
Congenital cardiologists have been performing keyhole techniques for holes in the heart and narrow valves for many years, and this is an area in which Dr Turner has specialist training and skills. In June 2000 it was a congenital cardiologist that performed the first human keyhole valve replacement. Dr Turner has been involved in valve implantation since 2002.
As procedures have become available for adults such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation and occlusion of the left atrial appendage cardiologists such as Dr Turner already had many of the skills to undertake these new procedures. Therefore Dr Turner has led many of these developments in the South West of England and some of these procedures are still only available in Bristol.
